Have you ever reached a goal you’ve been working toward, only to find yourself looking around at what everyone else was doing?
Maybe you finished a big project at work, but someone else received a promotion. Maybe you’ve been consistently exercising, but someone you know just completed a marathon. Maybe your business is growing, but someone else’s seems to be growing faster.
In those moments, it’s easy to feel like your accomplishments suddenly don’t count.
But what if the problem isn’t your progress?
What if the finish line keeps moving?
When Enough Never Feels Like Enough
Comparing ourselves to others is part of being human. The problem isn’t noticing what someone else has accomplished—it’s believing their success somehow makes our own feel smaller.
Instead of celebrating where we’ve arrived, we immediately look for the next benchmark. Before long, “enough” always feels just out of reach because the finish line keeps moving.
When the Finish Line Moves
Imagine crossing the finish line of a race only to have someone quietly move it another mile.
That’s what comparison often does.
Every accomplishment becomes temporary because there’s always another person doing something different, faster, or bigger. When we keep moving the finish line, we never give ourselves permission to recognize how far we’ve already come.
A Different Way Forward
The next time you catch yourself comparing, try asking a different question:
How have I grown since I started?
That simple shift brings your attention back to the only progress you can truly measure—your own.You can still have goals. You can still want to grow. But you don’t have to dismiss today’s accomplishments to make room for tomorrow’s.
Growth and appreciation can exist at the same time.
This Week
The next time something goes well, pause before thinking about what’s next.
See if you can let yourself enjoy what you’ve accomplished before comparing yourself to someone else’s path.
If you notice the finish line starting to move again, gently bring your attention back to where you’re standing today.
Closing
There will always be someone with a different path, a different timeline, or a different definition of success.
That doesn’t make your accomplishments any less meaningful.
Your progress deserves to be recognized—not someday after the next achievement, but today.
Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop long enough to realize we’ve already come farther than we think.
